Mama said there’d be days like this…

Today started off normally.

Got up, sent the oldest to school and had breakfast.  Ended up rushed, as usual, and missed my tea.  Now, I don’t drink coffee.  But some caffeine is necessary in my life.  Unfortunately, so is dressing and brushing my teeth, all things that preempted any time I had for tea.

My poor dh has been working 18 hour days teaching a course, and I noticed when I got up that he forgot his lunch.  Understandable, he was up and out the door before 4:30 a.m.  So I grabbed it and after dropping the youngest at preschool, I drove to the base to drop it off.  Cause I’m such a good wife.

Well I drove the 20 minutes into the base to find no parking in front of the Regiment’s doors.  And right when I’m going to defy parking law and take the handicapped spot for 3 minutes while I drop the lunch off, an MP car pulls up.  So I go to the parking lot and see that most of these soldiers must be very used to driving big armoured vehicles.  Or at least, that’s the excuse I give them for parking so terribly.  So I park way in the back.  Then I go to grab my wallet.

And with my hand in my purse I visualize it, sitting next to the computer where I needed my credit card to order something.

This means that all the other things I had planned for this trip cannot happen.  The Father’s Day gift from the kitshop for my father who loves all things from the Regiment.  The all important Tim Horton’s run to finally get my tea…. In fact, I shouldn’t even be on the base without my wallet.  But I am here.

So I walk in the downpour with my 5 year old and drop the lunch off at the duty desk, hoping dh will get it at some point.  Or at least check his texts to know it’s there.

Then I drive all the way back home and grab my wallet, then to Town Office to register my kids for a couple day camps they chose.  I get there and discover I don’t have the paper I wrote them down on, so I had to try and guess what they wanted.  I am not even going to double check my guesses, I just came home and recycled that paper I forgot.  It’s better this way.

Picking my son up from preschool my daughter starts playing with a friend.  When it’s time to go she throws herself to the floor completely distraught that I am being such a terrible person that is requiring her to wear her rain jacket, you know, in the rain.  I consider giving her the phone to call Child Services, but eventually she complies.

I get in the door from the rain and all I want is a hot tea and a moment’s peace for lunchtime.  I boil water and open the fridge and as I’m opening I remember that I have no milk.  I was supposed to pick some up.  But by now I’ve changed to yoga pants and a hoodie and have no intention of leaving my house again until morning.

So after stomping my feet in a hissy fit that closely resembled my daughter’s only half an hour previous, I finish making the soup I started last night.  It seems cool enough now, so I start ladling it into the blender.  I put on the lid and press the button and…..

It is not cool.  It is scalding on my face and clothes.

And the entire kitchen.

So at this point, I have walked away.  Walked away from this mess and am sitting eating the little bit of creamy veggie soup that survived along with some tea made with borrowed milk from my neighbor, while typing this blog.

While my 3 year old basically inhales the microphone of his handheld Backyardigan’s karaoke toy while singing “Soccer Monster” as loud as physically possible.

I am…. perturbed.

It’s probably a good thing dh won’t be home until very late tonight.  I imagine teaching drill outside in the downpour won’t put him in an optimal mood, either.

And it may take me a while to face that kitchen again.

You are not going to forget this day, are you??? Maybe you can make a game out of cleaning up the kitchen and reward the child who helps the most!! I love you and if I was there I would come over and clean up for you.

I think I would be done with that day too. My husband and I share one credit card (as to not over spend) and it always seems he has it on the day I'm standing in line with a cart full of groceries and three screaming kids. GRRR!

Hope today is better for you!

It's sort of a weird and twisted comfort that comes from knowing that other people have terrible days like this too. As if I want to celebrate your misery… it isn't like that at all. Just glad to know I'm not the only one. 🙂

So. Just spend so much time reading your blog and I'm pretty sure I want to be your best friend. (Except Canada is so very far away from North Carolina.) I love that you have a daughter named Ivy because I have an Ivy and I've never met another. I also love your post about your husband. So real and honest and good.

Finally… I know you know about my servicemen sunday posts. And I know that you know that I live in the US and you live in Canada. BUT. I have a lot of readers that are Canadian, readers that I'm sure would love to have the opportunity to say thank you to your husband. So, how would feel about letting me spotlight you one sunday? No pressure, and no big deal if you'd rather not. I can tell you it's a pretty painless process though… a few answered questions via email, and some pictures if you'd let me include them. And that's it. Will you email me if you'd like to participate? And I'm totally following your blog. Not cause I want you to say yes, just cause reading it has been so much fun.

It's like one of those If You Give a Mouse a Muffin books, but in not such a good way. Yuck. Somedays are just such an endless, thankless chore that the best place to be is in yoga pants and a hoodie.

Ugh, I've done that with soup too. Burned the wrist of the hand holding the lid on the blender!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Are you at Edmonton? I'm trying to think if we might know anyone in common. Do you know Norm and Shannon Link?
