What 9 Year Old Doesn’t Want Action Figure Moses?

What does it mean to have a 9 year old?

It means that 9 years ago, Freckles entered the world.  (You can read about that here)

It means that in order to be his biological mother, there is no more pretending I am 21.
It means milestones like sitting for the first time….
Standing for the first time…

That adorable ‘wounded soldier’ crawl…

And finally learning to walk…

Have all been reached.

He’s been potty trained.  He’s mastered cutlery and he’s done the first day of the first year of school

He’s lost his first teeth, he’s learned to make his own KD and he’s conqured the TV remote.

He was born days after his dad’s first deployment ended and he’s seen him off on 2 more in his lifetime.

He’s held both his siblings right after they were born

Having a nine year old means a lot.
It means I have to actually remember that he can hear AND understand me if I talk when he is in earshot.  And he will remember and possibly repeat what he heard me say.
It means I have 3 more years before I have a live-in babysitter.
It means for the first time, that Kid Kamp shirt that only comes in one size per age group that goes to his elbows and knees embarassed him enough that it meant I spent my night hemming so he didn’t feel like he was too small.
It means he is able and more than willing to defend his siblings and his family.
It means the hero worship he has for his dad is that much more pronounced.  And it doesn’t help that he looks.  exactly.  like.  him.  (It does help his fathers piece of mind, though.  Just saying, he’s gone a lot.  It can only offer reassurance when your kid is your mini-me.)
It means I have a son who was kind hearted enough to drop a lunchtime activity  he really wanted to do last year because his friends told him his Kindergarden age sister was sad because she couldn’t find him on the playground and he figures it’s his responsibility to be there for her if she needs him.
It means I have a son who for his birthday picked the set at the Lego store that has the little minifigures that his brother and sister like, too, so that they can all be happy.
That was after also asking for an Action Figure Moses he saw at a gag store.
That’s right.
My nine year old wanted Action Figure Moses for his birthday.
Go figure.
It means, well, I don’t just have a 9 year old.  I have an amazing 9 year old.
Holy Crap.
That means next year he’s 10!

Argh! I wrote you a long comment, but then I closed the box before typing the verification word. I hate it when I do that. Anyway, you must be so proud of your little guy. He seems so caring and kind-hearted. It made me tear up a bit to read that he was born after your husband deployed…that must have been hard on everyone.

Hi & thanks for stopping by my blog. I have had a friend in BC that lives near the coast and is a member of a tribe that I cannot pronounce. Her name is Gloria Fred and we have corresponded for about 10 years and more recently I have come to know a very special lady named Belle that lives near Vancouver. I have never been to Canada but have always wanted to visit. Sadly it quite a long distance from NC so we settle for closer destinations. You have a lovely family and I was in the military too back in 1968-1970 and 19 months of that was in Viet Nam. Take care and thanks again for visiting.
